The computer scientist Christopher Langton observed several decades ago that innovative systems have a tendency to gravitate toward the “edge of chaos”: the fertile zone between too much order and too much anarchy.
There is a fascinating connection here between this innovative “"edge of chaos” and several other things. As Steven notes in the book, solid, liquid and gas — liquid is the middle and most powerful. Flow (also noted) is the place between control and out of control.
Holacracy, it seems to me, is similar. In that it is a structured system (unlike the chaos of totally flat orgs) but it is easy to change. It is “liquid.”
I can't help but try to draw another corollary to Medium — after all, it's in the middle. And liquid is a medium.
